"MARCONI SUPPORTERS" AWARD 2026

International Amateur Radio Award

”MARCONI SUPPORTERS”

is an international amateur radio award organised by A.R.I. Fidenza Radio Club, (www.arifidenza.it) , affiliated to the Italian Radio Amateurs Association (A.R.I.) with the patronage and historical supervision of the

Guglielmo Marconi Foundation
www.fgm.it

The purpose of this award is to provide historical and biographical insights into some of the key figures who, although perhaps not well known today to the general public interested in the life and works of the great scientist and inventor Guglielmo Marconi, nevertheless played a fundamental role in his personal and emotional, educational and cultural, academic, scientific and, finally, entrepreneurial development.

These figures contributed significantly to the construction of the context of relationships and opportunities that so greatly favoured the development and success of Marconi's great genius throughout his life.
As summarized by Dr. Barbara Valotti (Guglielmo Marconi Foundation), curator of the initiative with regard to historical aspects:

“..Inventor and entrepreneur, Italian and British, conservative and innovator, nationalist and cosmopolitan...Marconi's forty-year career: from when, as an anonymous twenty-year-old, he inaugurated the era of long-distance wireless communications, to when, as a public figure with significant diplomatic responsibilities, he passed away without ever having abandoned experimentation and research.”
(from the afterword of the book "Marconi, il ragazzo del Wireless" by Barbara Valotti and G. Dalle Donne - Hoepli ed.).

The award dedicates each month of the year 2026 to the name of a specific “supporter” of Marconi, and the special name of the commemorative station associated with each month incorporates an acronym of that person's name.

MONTH SPECIAL CALLSIGN FIGURE BRIEF DETAILS ABOUT FIGURES
JANUARY II4GMRC
Giuseppe Marconi Guglielmo Marconi's father, Giuseppe, was a landowner involved in various commercial activities. He supported his son financially in his early experiments. Marconi said of him: ‘He always encouraged my attempts, so much so that my first experiments were carried out with the means he spontaneously provided me with.
FEBRUARY II4AJMR
Annie Jameson Marconi Annie Jameson was an Irish girl from a family of distillers of the well-known whiskey, who moved to Italy to study music and then married Giuseppe. Annie always supported her son's work, and she and her husband were the first to believe in his genius.
MARCH II4AMRC Alfonso Marconi Guglielmo's brother, nine years his senior, was one of his assistants during his early experiments. In the summer of 1895, he fired the famous rifle shot from behind the Celestini hill, after receiving a radio signal from Villa Griffone, the family residence, over two kilometres away.
APRIL II4JDVS
Henry Jameson Davis Marconi's cousin on his mother's side, he advised him on the procedures for obtaining a patent and arranged a meeting with the chief engineer of the British Post Office, William Preece. He later became managing director of the Wireless Telegraph and Signal Company (later renamed the Marconi Wireless Company), while Marconi held the position of technical director.
MAY II4ROSA
Vincenzo Rosa A professor of physics and mathematics, he gave Marconi private lessons in electrical engineering, providing him with up-to-date basic training, teaching him about new theories and welcoming him into his home laboratory, where Guglielmo was able to practise. In his speech at the Swedish Academy when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics, Marconi cited the teaching of the “late Professor Rosa in Livorno” as the only real direct contribution to his education as a brilliant self-taught man.
JUNE II4PRCE William Henry Preece Chief engineer of the British General Post Office, Preece immediately became one of Marconi's most ardent supporters, organising public demonstrations and making the Post Office facilities available to him so that he could experiment over distances of several kilometres.
JULY II4JAFL
John Ambrose Fleming He studied with the famous James Clerk Maxwell, and later became a professor of electrical engineering and an experimenter. He was the inventor of the diode, or thermionic valve. In 1900, he became a consultant for the Marconi Company, a position he held until 1931. He was involved in what most people thought was impossible: the first radio link between the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean, established in 1901.
AUGUST II4KEMP
George Stephen Kemp He was one of William Preece's assistants, and later became Marconi's collaborator, helping him in his early experiments with long-distance transmission. Kemp was a crucial support figure for Marconi, particularly in London, when the young inventor was trying to perfect his inventions and prepare demonstrations for radio transmission.
SEPTEMBER II4PAGE
Percy Wright Paget He was an important assistant and technician to Marconi, playing a crucial role in the early pioneering days of wireless communications, especially during the famous experiment in 1901 that established the first transatlantic connection between Canada and England, when Paget worked alongside Marconi and another technician, George Kemp
OCTOBER II4NTTI
Francesco Saverio Nitti He was an important politician and Prime Minister in 1919-1920. His role was fundamental to Marconi's work on behalf of the Italian government. Of Marconi, to whom he also entrusted important public and diplomatic assignments, he said: ‘...modern Italy is represented by a few men: Garibaldi, Verdi and now Mr Marconi’.
NOVEMBER II4GCLB
Giuseppe Colombo Engineer and entrepreneur, founder of Edison and Senator of the Republic. It was he who proposed Marconi, just forty years old, for the position of Senator. In his report, he emphasised, among other things, that “wireless telegraphy is, and will perhaps remain, the greatest discovery of the century”.
DECEMBER II4SLRI
Luigi Solari He was an Italian engineer and officer in the Royal Navy. In 1897, he witnessed Marconi's first demonstrations for Italy in the Gulf of La Spezia. For over thirty years, he served as Marconi's attorney, advisor, spokesperson and emissary. Over the years, he also devoted himself to writing several detailed memoirs, becoming Marconi's first biographer.
